'King of the Hill' voice actor Jonathan Joss killed in San Antonio shooting, police say
Police announced the death of Jonathan Goss, the voice actor best known for his role as John Redcorn in the TV series "King of the Hill," in a shooting in San Antonio on Sunday.
The San Antonio Police Department reported, according to the San Antonio Express-News, that the suspect, 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Cega, was arrested and faces murder charges.
Police received a report of a shooting around 7 p.m. Sunday. They found Goss, 59, suffering from a gunshot wound near the road and attempted to save him until emergency medical services arrived and pronounced him dead.
The Express-News reported that Cega, Goss's neighbor, initially fled the scene, but police apprehended him a block away. The circumstances and motive for the shooting are still under investigation, according to police.
Goss is best known for his role as John Redcorn in the TV series "King of the Hill," which aired from 1997 to 2009. He replaced Victor Aaron, the original voice actor for Redcorn, in the second season of the series, after his death in a car accident. Joss also played the recurring role of Chief Ken Hottet on NBC's Parks and Recreation and has appeared on-screen in shows such as Ray Donovan, True Grit, and The Magnificent Seven.
"King of the Hill" has been revived for its fourteenth season, which will premiere on Hulu in August. Joss wasn't invited to participate in the revival, but he attended the "King of the Hill" cast and crew panel at 7 p.m. local time at the ATX Television Festival in Austin on Friday, about 48 hours before he was found shot in San Antonio.
Joss lost two dogs and his childhood home in San Antonio to a fire in January.
That's the house I grew up in. I'm more concerned about my dog, who died, but you know what? “God protect us,” Goss told KSAT at the time, adding that his father built the house in 1957.
Goss is of Comanche and Apache descent from White Mountain, and his television appearances as Native American characters have resonated with many fans, who have praised his work on social media.
One viewer wrote on Channel X: “John Redcorn was pretty much the only contemporary Native American representation in comedy when I was growing up. He was probably the funniest Native American character in the history of animation, and much of that was in Jonathan Goss’s brilliant portrayal of the uncle. May God have mercy on one of the best people to ever play this character.”
